  • Bike Month Throwback Charity Tees

Akinz started celebrating Colorado Bike Month for the first time back in 2010 where we featured a Commuter Tee design and delivered shirts by bike on Bike to Work Day (a couple years before we opened our Old Town Fort Collins store!)  We’ve still been celebrating Bike Month ever since but this year for bike month we wanted to do a little more for a few different bike non-profits in town and decided to do a throwback to re-visit some of those past designs.

For the month of June, 20% of all sales of these 3 designs will be donated to local bike non-profits!

Our Mountain Park tee is a new design this year featuring a knobby bike tire with Horsetooth Rock in the background.  It’s a visual that local mountain bikers know well.  This design made an obvious beneficiary choice to us of the Overland Mountain Bike Club.    Overland’s mission is to: “Promote the active, healthy sport of mountain biking by providing education and assistance to all trail users, and by working to build and maintain quality, sustainable trails that enhance the mountain biking experience.” and they spend lots of volunteer hours building and maintaining trails for all us local Fort Collins riders to enjoy each day.  20% of the Mountain Park tee sales for June will be donated to Overland Mountain Bike Club to use for future trail maintenance!

This Bike Month throwback design was our first ever Bike to Work day tee!  In 2010 we launched our Bike to Work day program where a portion of proceeds from the month’s featured t-shirt design would go to a local bike group and we chose the Fort Collins Bike Co-op.   To keep with tradition,  20% of all sales for this design thru the month of June will be donated to the Bike Co-op so that they can continue to help more people get on bikes.

The Bike Burst design is originally from 2011, but we thought the message around the center sunburst “Bicycles Make the World Go Round” aligned perfectly with the goals of our local Bike Fort Collins.  Not only does Bike Fort Collins focus on building bicycle infrastructure here in town and keeping our streets safe for cyclists, they also launched the Bike Share program for visitors and locals alike to be able to get all over town if they don’t have a bike.  They definitely help bicycles make Fort Collins go round.  20% of the sales of this shirt design will be donated to Bike Fort Collins in the month of June!

These shirts will all be available all month in our Old Town Fort Collins flagship store, online & at our Bike to Work Day Breakfast station at Happy Lucky’s Tea House on June 28th.  So choose your favorite design, choose your favorite beneficiary or grab all 3 and help our local bike community grow!

  • Staff Spotlight – Jenny Vazquez

Meet Jenny Vazquez! Jenny first started working at Akinz as an intern while finishing her degree in Apparel Design from Colorado State University. Now she has become part of the Akinz crew! She mainly does on production and spends most of her time sewing, working on graphic design projects, or soaking in all the different areas of working at Akinz (screen-printing, knitting, etc.). Jenny has lived in Fort Collins for 12 years now but has lived in Texas, Connecticut and most recently North Carolina. When she’s not at Akinz she is pursuing several other business ventures and raising her eight and ten year old kiddos.

While at CSU, Jenny loved designing women’s apparel that is has interesting shapes and also unique design details. Her Senior Capstone collection was an all-white collection that used hand crafted metalwork details. In the pic below, you can see handmade brass buttons along the shoulder cut-outs of this Resort Collection dress with hand-beaded metal fringe.

What is your favorite part about working at Akinz?
I have always love being part of Fort Collin’s “maker community” but while I was in school, my focus was very different. Now that I’m done with school I am so glad to continue to be around people that love to create art and use their hands as much as I do. I also love chatting with people from our community when they come into the store and want to hear more about what we do!

What is your favorite piece that Akinz currently has to offer?

I am super excited about our new line of leggings that are currently on pre-order! I helped get this project going as Suzanne’s design intern and we are so excited that we were able to keep them made in Colorado. My favorite style is probably the Northern Lights print because the colors are absolutely beautiful and I love the hand-drawn mountains at the bottom.

What is your favorite to make?
Flare leggings! I love working with stretch-knit fabrics and our new Flared leggings are super fun to make (and they wear like a dream). I am also really excited to be learning to use the knitting machine. I have been a knitter & crocheter for many years but love using the machine. It’s super fun! But truly, I love making anything… no lie.

What have you learned since working at Akinz?
I have learned how to use the knitting machine, how to screen print and so much about working with local manufacturers. I have also learned a ton about being an entrepreneur in the apparel industry! I get to see all the ups and downs and all the different roles that you get to play. Suzanne works so hard and is an inspiration!

What would people never guess that you do in your role?
I don’t shy away from doing anything that needs to be done. Everybody here is the same way.. so that’s a tough question! I do some cleaning, organizing, photography, and marketing that maybe people wouldn’t guess…

Before working at Akinz, what was the last job that you had?
Before going back to school at CSU, I worked at local fabric & sewing shop, Mama Said Sew. That is where I first fell in love with the “maker community” in Fort Collins. I taught sewing classes to all ages, helped people find the best fabrics for their projects, and tried to inspire people by sewing various samples out of our amazing fabrics.

Can you describe your style in five words or less?

    Sassy maker mama

What are your favorite things about Colorado?
Breweries, camping, the mountains, the people, the sun!

What are your interests and hobbies?
Sewing, making jewelry, drawing, painting and hanging out with the people I love.

    Any last words?

We love our customers and are so grateful to all of those who support our crazy dreams 🙂 Thank you!!

  • Find Your Wings Foundation: Cynthia Wilson

Meet our newest Find Your Wings Foundation beneficiary, Cynthia Wilson.  She will be biking across Zambia as part of to Bike Zambia 6: Ending HIV/AIDS and Empowering Women and Girls in Zambia.  She is looking to raise $4,000 for the cause.

As a young girl, people asked me, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” My response was always, “I want to make a difference.” I am going on a bike ride across Zambia. I will ride my bike for over 300 miles. I will also be creating a multimedia story to give to the organization to help promote the ride in the future.

Chooda is a non-profit organization that organizes this trip around giving back. It is one thing to ride your bike across a country for the sake of doing it. It is another thing to go into a community and immerse yourself in the poverty, the illness, and the people to make a difference. Continue Reading
